CCPCC means Committee of College Policy Committee Chairs, which is part of the Faculty Senate structure.

November 13 Meeting

Attending were all but one of the chairs of the various College Policy Committees.

Dr. Claire Advokat (Psychology) called the meeting to order and explained that the CCPCC is seeking input on Evaluation of Administrators, Faculty Senate resolution 03-09 ( http://senate01.lib.lsu.edu/facsen/Resolutions/sr03_09.htm )

FS president Carruth McGehee (Mathematics) has had meetings with deans and directors about 03-09, and there is general support for the idea of an annual administrative review.

There was much discussion, but not much support, for the idea of "summarizers" who would be trained by Human Resources to help administrators interpret their scores.  Most felt that administrators could handle just about anything thrown their way, but perhaps there should be resources to help them interpret the comments in the most constructive way.  It is important to keep the evaluation simple enough that it is routinely done, and it is important that people feel the evaluations produce results.  Deans should be compared to other Deans; Chairs to chairs in their own college and to counterparts in other colleges.  To guard against a few squeaky wheels, the number of people completing the survey must be expressed as a percentage of available participants.  There was concern that the raw data be kept for the entire duration of administrative service.  There was sentiment that evaluation instruments should be drafted before too much more effort goes into policy.  It was suggested that the instruments contain "core questions" (valid for all chairs or all deans, for example) and some optional questions specific to the unit.  Also, the administrator in question could request the addition of certain questions to take advantage of the evaluations as an opportunity to poll faculty on unit-specific issues.  It was suggested that the Faculty Senate investigate how other universities, particularly LSU's peer group, evaluate administrators.  Perhaps their instruments could be adopted.  Chairperson Advokat wrote these and many other good suggestions. The bottom line is that support for administrative evaluation is strong.

A very aggressive timetable was suggested to implement the administrative evaluations by summer 2004, if possible. By January 1, the Faculty Senate (which committee?) will try to amend 03-09 to take into consideration the suggestions of the CCPCC.  Each CPC would then discuss the revised 03-09, with the chairs to meet again to urge the Faculty Senate to adopt the resolution.  Michael Carpenter (Library Science) was elected Chairperson of this committee.
