I am a Prof. Paul Russo  graduate student. I joined his group on January 2003.

    Our research group has been working on a project devoted to the synthesis, characterization and evaluation of the optical properties of hierarchical composite colloidal particles. Fong (Langmuir  (1999),  15(13),  4421-4426) was the first group member  who reported on this type of particles ; he performed a ring-opening polymerization of g-benzyl-L-glutamate N- carboxyanhydride (BLG-NCA) onto the surface of amino functionalized silica nanospheres prepared by the Stober method. Later on, Fong (Langmuir  (2004),  20(1),  266-269) prepared this type of composite particles with a different polypeptide, poly(e-carbobenzyloxylysine). He reported on the colloidal crystalline phase that the particles  form under certain conditions. The resulting colloidal crystals are anisotropic as evidenced by observation under cross polarized microscope.


    My research is focused on the preparation of similar particles using different synthetic approaches. The goal of this is to produce particles of different morphology. Another objective of my research is to make chemical modifications on the polypeptide shell which will be described later on.
