QuickBasic Solution to the FH Phase Problem
updated October 27, 1998
Instructions
- Save the program as c:\FH.BAS
- Get an MS-DOS prompt (go to "Start" and look
for and click on MS-DOS icon)
- Type QBasic from MS-DOS prompt. A klutzy-looking blue
interface will open up.
- From the "File...Open..." menu, open the
program you downloaded.
- Theoretically, it runs! If not, you'll have to see me.
- Run it from the "Run....Start..." Menu
- The program prompts you for Sigma.
- On an old, slow computer, you can have the program
"Beep" each time it finds a solution. On a
modern computer, this will probably just be one
continuous beep.
- The program will find solutions and make a really crude
plot. If you haven't plotted anything to screen before,
you may study how this is done. Actually, the code used
here is not that different from the plotting code you use
in a modern language, like Visual Basic.
- Push Shift+PrintScreen to make a screen dump
- Open a word processor (e.g., Word)
- Paste the Screen Dump there and print.
- Re-run the program with different Sigma to see how the
phase diagram changes. .
