Internet Access Tips

If you are using a PC

  1. Most pages are designed in Word97--I'm too lazy to translate these to HTML. Some loss of equations and formatting can occur on translating, and two copies have to be maintained if I want to edit them. Yuck!
  2. If you are using Internet Explorer, you may be able to see the files directly, including equations and everything. Amazing. Internet Explorer may run slowly in this case.
  3. If you do not see the file directly, consider downloading Word97 Viewer which is free from Microsoft (all of the World Domination Plan).
  4. To download a copy of the Word files to save on a disk, right click on the blue hyperlink and you will be prompted for a location to store the files.
  5. Netscape should work OK, but don't expect it to automatically open the Word files. (Sometimes Internet Explorer doesn't open them either!) A qualified Netscape guru can probably make it open the Word files OK.

If you are working on a Mac

  1. God bless you--somebody has to keep this company afloat.
  2. Netscape may not be able to read the Word97 files (no viewer is available from Microsoft, last time I checked). One solution is to click on the desired file, which should cause you to be prompted for a location where the file should be saved. Insert a diskette formatted for PC's. The Mac will write the file to that disk. Take it to a PC and print it there. Sorry....but life's too short to satisfy everyone. You might do better to get Internet Explorer for Mac. There is some chance it can open these Word97 files, but I haven't tried it. Die-hard Netscape fans may also be able to find a Word97 plug-in for Netscape on their site. Last time I looked, there was none for Mac, however.
  3. Word97 should be available for the Mac by now.
